چکیده

We examine Lyman continuum extinction (LCE) in H II regions by comparing infrared fluxes of 49 H II regions in the Galaxy, M31, M33, and the LMC with estimated production rates of Lyman continuum photons. A typical fraction of Lyman continuum photons that contribute to hydrogen ionization in the H II regions of three spiral galaxies is . 50 %. The fraction may become smaller as the metallicity (or dust-to-gas ratio) increases. We examine the LCE effect on estimated star formation rates (SFR) of galaxies. The correction factor for the Galactic dust-to-gas ratio is 2-5. Subject headings: dust, extinction — H ii regions — galaxies: ISM — infrared: ISM: continuum — stars: formation

INFRARED OBSERVATIONS OF NEBULAR EMISSION LINES FROM GALAXIES at z ≃ 3

We present the first results from a program of near-infrared spectroscopy aimed at studying the familiar rest-frame optical emission lines from the H II regions of Lyman break galaxies at z ≃ 3. By targeting redshifts which bring the lines of interest into gaps between the strong OH − sky emission, we have been successful in detecting Balmer and [O III] emission lines in all five galaxies obser...

The ultraviolet colours and dust attenuation of Lyman-break galaxies

Using GALFORM, a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation in the cold dark matter cosmology, we study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) colours of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the redshift range 2.5 ≤ z ≤ 10. As the impact of dust on UV luminosity can be dramatic, our model includes a self-consistent computation of dust attenuation based on a radiative transfer model. We find that intrinsicall...

Spatial Distribution of Dust Grains within H Ii Regions

We discuss the dust distribution within photoionized regions. Assuming a geometry with a central dust cavity, which is strongly suggested by the literature, we can estimate the cavity’s radius from the ratio of the infrared and radio fluxes by using a simple transfer model of Lyman continuum photons. We apply the method to a sample of the Galactic H ii regions. The estimated typical radius of t...

Star formation rate in galaxies from UV , IR , and H α estimators

Infrared (IR) luminosity of galaxies originating from dust thermal emission can be used as an indicator of the star formation rate (SFR). Inoue et al. (2000, IHK) have derived a formula for the conversion from dust IR luminosity to SFR by using the following three quantities: the fraction of Lyman continuum luminosity absorbed by gas (f), the fraction of UV luminosity absorbed by dust (ǫ), and ...

Lyman Alpha Emitters in Hierarchical Galaxy Formation Ii. Uv Continuum Luminosity Function and Equivalent Width Distribution

We present theoretical predictions of UV continuum luminosity function (UV LF) and Lyα equivalent width (EW) distribution of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) in the framework of the hierarchical clustering model of galaxy formation. The model parameters about LAEs were determined by fitting to the observed Lyα LF at z = 5.7 in our previous study, and the fit indicates that extinction of Lyα photons ...
